A group marched from the Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in Greenwood across the Ballard Bridge to Westlake Park. The march and rally, organized by Tibetan Association of Washington, was organized to show support of the people of Tibet and to increase awareness of the self-immolations and suffering in the country. Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism provided spiritual support but not political support.


Jampa Jorkhang, president if the Tibetan Association of Washington, said local Tibetans observed the Tibetan new year through religious observances, and then decided to skip celebrations to show their solidarity for their community in their homeland.
