Angel Garay, 76, worked in Nogales, Sonora for 30 years. His portrait was taken inside a seafood restaurant facing the U.S./Mexico border. A hackney cab drives through Piccadilly Circus in London. A portrait of Elisha Lancaster, 5, is taken on her family’s horse that she often rides with her mother near their home in Snoqualmie Valley, Washington. Lancaster was the first child in Washington state to be “adopted” as an embryo. While the practice of donating embryos is, in itself, not particularly controversial, the question of what’s to be done with some 400,000 frozen embryos in storage nationwide touches on some of the most controversial issues of the day, from abortion to stem-cell research. What do you do as a refugee in America with few career skills? The Seattle-area Burundians, including Ranito Simbagoye, turned to the land and created a farming cooperative Summer 2009 in Kent, Wash. Enette Dumerin holds her 3-year-old twins, Carlebre (left) and Jeff Dumerin, in a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft about to take off Jan. 17, 2010 from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, headed for the United States. More than 180 evacuees were transported in the aircraft five days after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated their homeland. The evacuees had ties to the U.S., either through citizenship or residency. Jesse Budd, 2007 Miss Rodeo Washington, talks Miss Teen Rodeo Washington contestants over breakfast in Ellensburg, Wash. Danella Sydow is restoring the eight-foot-tall Lady Liberty statue, which has been an Alki Beach landmark since 1952. Her portrait is taken near her Bronze Works workstation, where she will reassemble the statue. Fred Charlton, 69, poses for a portrait inside a train station in London. BUMBLEBEE 02-01-10

Amy Denio, a Seattle singer and composer, plays a variety of instruments including the accordion, clarinet, guitar and percussion. A portrait of Denio is taken outside her West Seattle Home. Besides writing music, she composes for choreographers and has had stints with bands and ensembles in Austria, Switzerland, Estonia, Taiwan, Hungary, India and Italy. 76506 Before Angelo Famalaro’s doctor appointment, his wife Anne Famalaro converses with one of the nurses. She brought a package of cookies for the nurses to share. For years, Angelo has been a patient of the Prescott VA hospital suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Anne, sometimes called “Saint Anne” by the residents, visits Angelo almost everyday.
